Resident hub

Your home is getting new windows, and some homes get new doors too. This page explains how we work, how long it takes and how your home stays secure.

This work is inside your home, so someone needs to be in. If that is hard, call us and we will find a way.

What happens, step by step

We finish one room before we start the next, so the rest of your home stays normal.

  1. Step 1: We arrive and agree the order

The team shows you their ID card. Then they walk round with you and agree which room to start in.

    What you need to do

Be at home. Say now if there is a room you would like us to do last.

  2. Step 2: The room is covered

Dust sheets go down on the floor and over any furniture left in the room.

    What you need to do

Clear the windowsill and move things about a metre back from the window.

  3. Step 3: The old window comes out

The old frame is cut out and taken away. The room gets cold for a short time, and there is some noise and dust.

    What you need to do

Keep pets and small children out of that room.

  4. Step 4: The new window goes in

The new frame is fitted and sealed. The glass, handles and locks go in and are tested. This takes about one to two hours.

    What you need to do

Nothing. Ask the fitter to show you how the new locks work.

  5. Step 5: Finishing and cleaning

The inside edge is sealed, the glass is cleaned and the sheets come up. The old frame goes straight out to the van.

    What you need to do

Have a look. If something is not right, now is the easiest time to say.

  6. Step 6: On to the next room

We do the same in the next room. A team usually fits several windows in a day.

    What you need to do

Clear the next room before we get to it, if you can.

  7. Step 7: Doors

A door is taken out and replaced on the same day, usually in two to three hours. You always have a working, lockable door at night.

    What you need to do

Clear the hall by the door, and be in while the door is being changed.

  8. Step 8: Handover and keys

We show you how every new window and door opens, closes and locks. We give you the keys and the paperwork.

    What you need to do

Try the locks yourself before we leave, and count your keys.

How long it takes

  • A normal windowAbout one to two hours.
  • A large or bay windowHalf a day, sometimes more. We will tell you at the survey if you have one.
  • A front or back doorAbout two to three hours, all in one go.
  • A whole homeUsually one or two days. Larger homes can take three.
  • Working hoursNormal working hours. We will not start early or work late without asking you first.

Keeping your home secure

Never left open

We only take a door out when the new one is here and ready. Someone from our team stays with the open doorway the whole time.

If a door cannot be finished, we put the old one back and come back another day. Windows are the same. Nothing is left as a hole.

New keys

New doors come with new keys. Count them and check every key works before we leave.

If you need extra keys for a carer or a key safe, tell us at the survey.

What to move before we arrive

If you cannot move something, leave it and tell us. We will help. Please do not lift anything heavy.

  • WindowsillsOrnaments, plants and photos. These get knocked, and they are the things people forget.
  • Curtains and blindsTake them down in the rooms we are working in. If you cannot reach them, tell us and we will help.
  • FurnitureMove it about a metre back from the window if you can.
  • Precious thingsAnything you would hate to lose is safer in another room for the day.
  • PetsKeep them in a room we are not working in. Doors and windows will be open.
  • OutsideMove bins, pots and garden furniture away from the wall under each window.

After the work

The first few weeks

New windows and doors can feel stiff at first. They ease with use.

A little mist on the inside of the glass in cold weather is normal, mostly in kitchens and bathrooms. Opening the small vents at the top of the frame helps.

If something is wrong

Call 01935 315315 and tell us your address and what is wrong. We will arrange a visit to look at it, free of charge.

Tell us about small things too: a draught, a stiff lock or a mark on the wall. Your new windows and doors are covered after we leave, and the details are in your paperwork.
