For most houses a straightforward like-for-like replacement is covered by permitted development, so no application is needed. Listed buildings, conservation areas and any change to the size or position of an opening are the situations where permission is more likely to be needed. A composite door has a solid timber or foam core faced in GRP, which generally gives better insulation and resistance to warping than a uPVC door, at a higher price. A uPVC door is lighter on the budget and still performs well; your surveyor can show you both so you can compare them against your own door rather than a brochure photo.

Most people notice less draught and less outside noise straight away. Some condensation on the inside of new glass in cold weather is normal while the house settles into less air leaking out, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms, and opening the trickle vents at the top of the frame helps.

Yes. Frame colour, glazing and hardware are agreed with your surveyor and confirmed in writing before manufacture, so what arrives is what you chose. Period properties often suit a timber-look finish; modern builds often suit a plain colour on slimmer aluminium frames.
