Reversible air conditioning

Both directions

One system, all year round

A cooling-only unit sits idle from September to May. A reversible system works as an efficient heat pump in winter, so the unit that cools your bedroom in August warms it quickly in February.

Heat moved out of the room
How a reversible unit works in summer and winterAn indoor wall unit and an outdoor unit joined by pipework. In summer heat is moved out of the room to the outdoor unit. In winter the cycle reverses and heat is drawn from outside air into the room.INSIDEWall unitOUTSIDEOutdoor unitSummer, heat outWinter, heat in
The same unit works in both directions, which is why we only fit reversible systems.

The VAT relief

Why we only fit reversible units

Permanently fixed reversible units in homes currently qualify for 0% VAT. Cooling-only and portable units do not.

Current rate

0% VAT

Qualifying reversible installations, ends 31 March 2027.

The outdoor unit

Planning made simple

Most outdoor units for reversible systems are covered by permitted development, so no planning application is needed. Cooling-only units are not covered in the same way. Your surveyor confirms your position at the survey.

Permitted development, houses

1.5m³

Outdoor unit volume limit, and at least 1m from the edge of a flat roof.

Pairing with solar

Cooling powered by your own solar.

The hottest afternoons are also when solar generates most. Run your air conditioning then and much of its power comes from your roof. In the evening or in winter it draws from the grid like anything else.

Fitting with solar

One team, one visit

Having solar fitted? Add air conditioning to the same visit and the electrical work is planned once, with fewer visits and less disruption.

Storage

A battery extends it into the evening

With battery storage, surplus solar from the afternoon can power your cooling in the evening. Your surveyor will size it with you.
